May 23, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

On Saturday, May 25th the Village of New Hyde Park will join with our local veterans in holding our Memorial Day parade and tribute.  I strongly urge you to come out and pay your respects.

Our parade is not to bring in the unofficial start of summer.  Our parade isn’t to honor our veterans.  Memorial Day is a very special day in our Village calendar.  It is the day when we as a community come together to honor the 56 young men from New Hyde Park who gave their lives defending our liberty.  Fifty-six young men, most in their early twenties, who left New Hyde Park when our country needed them and never returned.  They paid the ultimate price for our freedom.  The very least we can do is to maintain this yearly tribute to them and participate as a community.

The Memorial Day parade will step off from the Lakeville Road parking lot and proceed east on Jericho Turnpike. The veterans will hold a brief ceremony at Village Hall where they will lay a wreath at the Village monument honoring those New Hyde Park residents who lost their lives in our nation’s wars.  A new plaque has been added to the rock in front of Village Hall commemorating the sacrifices made by our heroes during the Korean War.

The procession will continue up New Hyde Park Road to Memorial Park.  There, another ceremony will be held to decorate the monument at the park named in honor of our fallen sons.  We will be joined by some of our elected officials.

I urge you to come out and show your support for our 56; along the parade route, at Village Hall or at Memorial Park.  If you have other commitments, please keep these young men in your thoughts and prayers.  Let’s hope and pray that we never add another name to this honored roll.

Sincerely,

Lawrence J. Montreuil

Mayor, Village of New Hyde Park
