The Holiday Season in the Village of New Hyde Park began on Saturday, December 1st at the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Attending this Village event has become a holiday tradition for many in the community and every year it grows in popularity. This year, we had our largest attendance with over 200 guests.
Cultural Commissioner Lisa Miranda organizes this event and she strives to make it special every year. The festivities began in the Marcus Christ Community Center as the Magic of Amore puts on a great show with illusions and interactive magic acts. Light refreshments, beverages, and candy canes are available for all to enjoy. Members of the NHP Memorial High School Band and Chorus entertained guests with holiday music and song. To the surprise and delight of all, just as dusk fell, Santa Claus arrived on the back of the New Hyde Park Fire Truck. Everyone gathered on the front lawn and watched as Santa helped Mayor Lawrence Montreuil light the Village Christmas Tree.
Park Association Girl Scout members from over 12 Troops attended, bringing a toy donation for the Marine Corp. Toys for Tots annual drive, and assisting throughout the day. The donation drive was so successful that the toy drive was continued at Village Hall through December 14th. Hundreds of toys were donated and we hope to make this donation drive an annual tradition.
This event is generously funded and made possible by the New Hyde Park Lions Club and the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to the NHP Lions Club for donating a Christmas tree and wreathes for the Community Center.
Commissioner Miranda is grateful to all the volunteers who helped with refreshments and activities, and to the NHP Memorial High School Band and Chorus for bringing holiday music and song to this wonderful event. It’s events like this that help keep the community connected. If you are new to the Village or have never attended this annual holiday event, we hope you join us next year. Everyone is welcome!!
